If you’re relying solely on curl type charts to guide your cutting, colouring, or product choices — it’s time to go deeper. The real art of working with curls lies in understanding the full story of the hair.

When we’re assessing curls, these are the game changers:
🧬 Texture – Fine, medium or coarse strands drastically affect how curls respond to products and cuts.
💧 Porosity – Crucial for understanding moisture retention and colour absorption.
🌀 Elasticity – Helps assess the health and strength of the curl pattern.
🌿 Density – Impacts shape, volume and product distribution.

My client had tight coils through the front and looser texture at the back — textbook example of why a one-size-fits-all approach won’t cut it. Literally.

When you learn to read each head of curls as a combination of these factors, that’s when your cuts, colour work, and product recommendations truly come to life.

🌿When it comes to curls, one size doesn’t fit all—so I customize every foil placement to enhance each client’s unique curl pattern and color goals.

🌿In this session, I used a combination of fine weaved foils painted to the root snd a textured weave and tease leaving some sections soft and blended at the root to keep the finish natural and seamless. This approach helps maintain dimension and movement in curly hair.

☀️ We chose a warm tone to complement and soften natural silver strands—adding warmth and glow without overpowering the overall look.

👉Remember: curls reflect light differently, so strategic color placement is key!

For this dry cut, I used a wide-tooth comb to create a seemless cut that enhances her natural pattern and can be confidently worn even if it’s not styled as curly!

It’s been a while since I last cut Lauren’s curls! When I saw her last, she was a very bold dark color and decided to embrace growing it out. Look at those stunning silver curls! Even with some dark still in the mix, it’s proof that growing out color can look amazing 🤩 Especially with naturally curly hair, as the different tones can really make those curls look more interesting!

Lauren has been cutting her own curls, and I often notice the front gets a bit shorter, which is totally normal when you can’t quite reach the back. No judgment here — I totally get it and I’m so happy to give theses curls a bit of balance and hydration on this visit 🙏

We’ve been working on lightening to seamlessly blend Jenny’s full colour grow-out and natural white hair. After a detailed consultation, we decided to enhance the gorgeous blonde she already has, adding more depth and dimension.

I used a few high-lift foils with the Pure Evolve permanent range to brighten and blend her naturally lighter hairline. Then, to create a flawless blend, I used Pure Evoke Demi Permanent in level 8 at the roots and levels 9/10 for the mids and ends, giving us this stunning golden blonde. Sometimes, less really is more! 🌟

🤩Gayle has now grown her curls to a good length and I have grown enough confidence and skill, to cut off those layers and create this gorgeous shape! 🫶

Gayle has very tight textured curls underneath and looser ones on top. So we had to let the length grow so we could achieve the hair goal! And once we finally cut the top layers we were able to get a more even curl texture 😁
